An illustrated science‑fantasy novel

THE Measure OF FREEDOM

Two young men, seen from behind, walk across a wet stone plaza toward a white winlet bearing the sign of House Teriel: a dark-haired weyren in plain brown clothes and a fair-haired young man in a long ivory coat with a dark-blue collar and cuffs. Behind them, a gate with glowing lines along its frame; above, white terraces and towers among cypresses on the hills, and a sunset over mountains and a lake.
Ront and Zor leave House Zerdelli

Zorakdel Teriel had planned to spend two hours at House Zerdelli.

Ront hadn't planned on going anywhere at all.

The evening wasn't going well for either of them.

The novel is complete. An illustrated web edition is in the works.

About the novel

Ront is a weyren and an arena fighter. He refused to finish off an opponent who could no longer defend himself — and landed in a cell for it. Zor heard about it almost by chance — and made a decision that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time.

Now they're on their way to Kiantra Academy.

Zor expects to deliver one particularly troublesome fighter.

Ront expects to survive a change of owner.

Under Kiantra's guidance, Ront will have to learn to handle a dangerous power. But lessons are only the beginning: ahead lie the intrigues of the Great Houses, the roads of the North, investigations and duels. And some of the people Ront is sure are up to something will turn out to be friends.

For now, the task is more modest: get there.

Even that is proving difficult.
